If you haven’t heard him yet, Joe Bonamassa is a pretty damn good guitar player. Whether you enjoy blues mixed with rock and roll or not, you can’t deny the man’s talents on the old gitbox, or his ridiculously impressive collection of vintage guitars and amplifiers. As far as effects go, Joe knows what he wants, and so he got together with Way Huge Electronics and Dunlop to come up with a special overdrive pedal, with everything he needs under the hood. Let’s take a gander at the Way Huge Overrated Special™ Overdrive (what a great name, too!).

The user interface here is basic, and was intended to be that way, so you can plug in and rock. The two big, fat controls on the Overrated Special™ are Volume and Gain, each with a great range for them to individually control. The core of this pedal is an old school Green Rhino Overdrive, that creator Jeorge Tripps hot-rodded to give you more midrange. He also added in a 500Hz control, enabling for an easy boost of the low mid section, for a bit more punch and bolder tones. There’s a lone Tone control as well, making the overdriven tones either on the warmer side, or cranked up for a bright and sparkling high end.

Tone-wise, this thing rips. Excellent boost tones, crunchy drive sounds and big, bold gain when the Drive is cranked. Sure to push any amp into gorgeous breakup territory, the Overrated Special™ is an excellent addition to the already rad lineup of Way Huge pedals out on the market today. Supposedly, there were only 1000 of these made, and the jury is still out on whether or not a second run will be coming, so if you can find one, you might have to pay a pretty penny for it. However, you won’t be disappointed in the sound, and it is sure to be a pedal that appears on (at least 1000) boards for a long time to come.
