When you picture a list of classic analog delay effects in your mind, today’s featured pedal is almost always going to pop up on that list. The DM-2 Analog Delay from Boss has a simple layout, but there is a massive analog beast of a delay hiding behind that off-pink exterior.
Starting things off, Repeat Rate controls the repetition rate of the delayed effect. Echo adjusts the output level of the echo, which you can get to almost 100% dry signal if you so desire (but why would you want to do that?). Finally, Intensity is probably the control that propels the DM-2 past most other delays in this category. Once you crank it up past about noon, this crazy self-oscillation begins, making some out-of-this-world feedback tones and opening up the pedal as a true analog delay. This lone knob might be worth the price alone.
The main thing that makes these delays so special, according to enthusiasts and collectors, are the internal chips used to build them. Having slightly different sounds, the 3005 (thicker, darker sound) and 3205 (brighter and clearer) chips can have a drastic effect on how much a DM-2 will cost you, as well as how you use the delay (if your ear is actually that good). Regardless of which chip you have, this delay is the stuff of legend, and will put a smile on your face every time you turn it on. Another classic delay from Boss, snag one up if you get the opportunity.
