There are some pedal companies that just plain do their own thing, and Lone Wolf Audio is one of those companies. Constantly creating new pedals, with an almost cryptic website full of snippets of information and ordering policies, they follow no one’s rules, and we love ’em for that very fact. Their pedals don’t follow any traditional paths, either, which we dig even more, and sometime even the simplest of their pedals (of which there aren’t many) can be full of surprises. Which bring us to today’s featured pedal, the Backhand Reverb.
At first glance, the Backhand appears to be a simple, four-knob pedal with minimal graphics on a plain black enclosure…which, it is, mostly, until you turn it on. Something about the special circuit that Lone Wolf has created inside brings this pedal into a different realm of reverb, and the controls have a lot to do with that as well. Reverb adjusts the amount of ‘verb the pedal gives out, and Volume produces, well, the overall volume output from the Backhand, both extremely necessary controls, with nice range on both.
Dampen and Dwell are the next two controls, and they help to steer the ship, so to speak, and shape the tone and feel of the pedal. Adjusting intensity, length and feedback properties, these controls are what give the Backhand its special sparkle and attitude – check the video below to see how all of these controls interact to form a powerful and spacious reverb.
Since this is our first foray into the world of Lone Wolf Audio effects, we are quite excited about what’s coming next. We have a couple more of their pedals in the cue, so be sure to check back and see what else they’re currently making, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, head on over to their website and check out the plethora of pedals they’ve got up right now. But you’d better hurry, ’cause who knows how long they’ll be up before taking a back seat to some other new, awesome piece of gear. Special thanks to the crew at Lone Wolf Audio for creating a batch of rad pedals for us, can’t wait to sit down and dig into some more great effects!
