Cross-pollination pedals between different builders is unfortunately an all-too-rare thing in this magical world of effects, but when it does happen to happen, it’s usually pretty creative and special. Such is the case with today’s pedal, a 2-in-1 from two of the most popular pedal companies out there right now, JHS Pedals and Keeley Electronics. The Steak and Eggs combines two popular pedals from each of these respective companies, the famous Keeley Compressor and the Morning Glory Overdrive from JHS – having these two gems in one enclosure, with a couple cool add-ons, makes for one hell of a musical ride.
The left side is the Morning Glory Overdrive from JHS, and if you’re not familiar with this pedal from some reason, we’ll let you in on it right now. Volume, Tone and Drive are the usual drive control suspects, but they come with a special addition in the Steak and Eggs version. JHS released a pedal called the State Line a couple years back, which featured the Morning Glory circuit, but with higher gain available on tap. They’ve brought that back here as well, but as an even more improved version, with more power, punch and dirt with the flick of a switch. Fans have been calling for this for years, and here it is in all its high gain glory (pun intended).
The right side is a new version of the classic 2-knob Keeley Compressor, but it features THREE knobs this time around, for a little more diversity and optional control. Sustain and Level are there, as always, but the Steak and Eggs version feature a Blend control, where you can blend your guitar’s original signal back into the mix, really allowing you to control the amount of overall compression and brightness the pedal is mixing into your signal path. This version also features a faster release time, producing that Keeley warmth and sustain while retaining excellent note clarity.
On top of all this, there’s an order toggle switch, letting YOU decide which side goes first or second in the pedal chain, producing different but both extremely usable results. There’s also a bright cut switch on the inside for the Morning Glory, for further tweaking and dialing in of the exact tone you’re after. Having a pedal like the Steak and Eggs first or second in your chain makes the rest of your board a breeze to figure out and set up, and since they are two of the most used and talked about effects on the market, with extras, you know you’re getting a quality pedal that’s going to provide incredible tone for years. Thanks to Josh and JHS for sending this guy over for us to check out – here’s hoping for more collaborations between more pedal companies in the near future, and for years to come!
