digitech timebender digital delayToday’s wicked rad and partially insane pedal is of the delay variety – a shocker, I’m sure, given how much we love delay around here. This one really steps it up a notch, though, and introduces some great features to accentuate and exasperate your delayed tone, feel and sound. DigiTech has been immersed in the delay world for years now, and the TimeBender Digital Delay might just be their most complex and option-filled model yet.

Where to begin with something like this? Let’s just go left to right, m’kay, and start with the big fella: the Delay Mode selector. Enabling you to choose from Analog, Digital, Moving Head Tape, Fixed Head Tape, Dynamic (ducking delays), Reverse and Time Warp, this pedal immediately will capture your attention, and will possibly have you not returning any phone calls or text messages for the entire weekend while you experiment…with the pedal, I mean. Delay Time will get you caught in a range of times going up to FIVE seconds, more than enough for the gig at your local watering hole next Thursday night. The Voicing knob allows you to alter the pitch of the delayed effects, including octave shift and more, really opening up the pedal for experimentation and new, unexplored tones. Mix, of course, mixes the wet and dry signal together, to form a more perfect union for us all.

Tone explores a nice range of frequencies to choose from, giving you optional analog-ish, lower end, darker repeats, or higher, cleaner, digital-sounding echoes, or a lot of stuff in between as well. Repeats will get you a single, solid echo, or a whole boatload of echoes, depending on what you need and how much of it you truly want. The Multiplier button lets you select from a few time subdivision modes (Quarter Note, Half Note, Eighth Note and Dotted Eighth Note), for yet another slew of options to play around with and find your specific delay voice. The Modulation knob dials in some vintage warble, with a nice sweep between Slow, Medium and Fast, perfect for dialing in song after song.

The Pattern knob selects the delay pattern that will be repeated at the selected tempo, while the Store option lets you, well, store up to 4 specific presets that you create, which can then be selected by the Right footswitch. There’s also the option to use the TimeBender as a looper (for up to 20 seconds), indicated by the Rec/Play/Overdub label on the Left footswitch, where you can also hold your repeated note or chord as long as that footswitch is pressed (and held) down for any length of time. Not to mention that you can tap in the delay tempo using the Right footswitch, too, plus Stop whatever loop you have going on in the blink of an eye as well.

The TimeBander also features Stereo Inputs and Outputs for running a sweet dual amp setup, plus a Footswitch Input (use with the FS3X) to scroll through the saved Memory settings, and an Expression pedal input as well, to adjust your delay times on the fly. Whew! What a beast of a delay/looper, etc right here. So much fun to dig into and see what can happen, the TimeBender is guaranteed to shift your perspective on normal delay pedals, and will hopefully enhance your playing as well. Although now discontinued, you can find these great pedals on eBay or Reverb.com for relatively decent prices, so don’t be afraid to snatch up this beauty from DigiTech if you see it!

  1. Hmm.. Almost what I’m looking for? Decades ago, & I mean that literally, I had in my possession for some time, an ec100 echo chamber, by Univox. This unit being Very similar in the delay department with this model, and record capabilities. Though the Univox came with, Or most likely, sold separately, a micro tape which gave you from 30 seconds to about 3 minutes recorded loop playback. Question, does this do the same? I think the time on this is pretty limited, but very close to what I’m looking for.
