The gang over at Source Audio has been creating some unique musical gear since their inception in 2005, and their lineup of One Series pedals have taken the guitar community by storm. Seemingly simple in layout and design, these pedals house some secret functions and sounds that really make them stand out from the crowd. Today’s featured pedal just happens to be one from the One Series, the Mercury Flanger, which has a ton of sounds and tones as well.
Depth, Speed, Resonance and Delay make up the foremost control section of the Mercury Flanger. The overall mix of these controls is a fantastic tool for being innovative and creative while experimenting with many different flange tones and sounds. The Delay knob is a cool addition as well, enabling you to mix elements of a chorus effect in with the flanger sounds, opening a whole new world of sonic possibilities. The Speed knob is unique here as well, letting you set different tap divisions (quarter, eighth, triplet, and 16th) with ease, as well as being able to tap in whatever speed you need via an external tap switch.
Another of the main functions here is a small toggle switch in the center of the controls, featuring 3 distinct flanger modes. Classic mode harkens back to the classic early flanger sounds heard on countless albums, and adds nice depth to lead tones and chords. Thru-Zero features some tape-based, out-of-this-world flanger tones, instantly inventing big, fat whoosh-type sounds for big, fat walls of modulation laid over your guitar’s dry signal. Finally, the Shadow mode add some smooth but bold jet-type flange sounds, again allowing so much creativity to come through when dialed in with the main control knobs.
As if all this wasn’t enough, the One Series pedals have more features hidden inside, too. The Mercury Flanger links to the Neuro App for access to a free library of additional flanger algorithms, which can be downloaded directly to your pedal via USB. The Neuro App also offers an extended set of adjustable parameters including Wet/Dry Mix, Output Level, Tremolo, a Parametric EQ, Lo Retain, Advanced Signal Routing, and more. And, every One Series pedal is MIDI compatible on top of that, but only when coupled with the Neuro Hub (sold separately), enabling you to save up to 128 presets.
Featuring either analog buffered or relay-based True Bypass, and being compatible with Source Audio expression pedals and the Hot Hand 3 Universal Wireless Effects Controller, the Mercury Flanger, and all the One Series pedal from Source Audio, are extremely versatile and able of exploiting all of your creativity with ease. Thanks so much to Jeff, Roger and everyone at Source Audio for letting us check out this killer flanger pedal – stay tuned for an upcoming review of their Vertigo Tremolo also, and don’t forget to visit the Source Audio website for more incredible pedals and gear!
