When you think about the best, most-used and highly-sought after amps ever produced, everyone’s list almost always includes a Blackface Fender of some sort, and for good reason. Those amps made in the 1960’s have a character and tone not easily reproduced, by amp or pedal, putting them truly in a class of their own. The Magic 6 Preamp from RST Custom Effects seeks to reproduce some of those coveted tones, but in solid state amps as well, giving them that smooth, warm, tube-type feel, without all the maintenance.

Featuring just 2 controls, Volume and Gain, the Magic 6 is fairly easy to dial in a great sound with. Once you set the Volume to where you want it, in conjunction with your bypassed signal, you can pretty much leave it alone and focus on the Gain. This control has a nice range, going from a slightly driven boost tone, to warm overdrive sounds, to an almost light-fuzz kinda tone when cranked. Check out the video below to hear the spectrum of sounds the Magic 6 will put out with ease, useful for a ton of different musical situations.

Although I wasn’t able to wrangle up a solid state amp for this demo, I tried the Magic 6 Preamp through several tube amps, and it sounded incredible, so I imagine it will really bring a solid state amplifier to life! Easy to use, great tones to be had and using awesome JFET technology, the Magic 6 isn’t quite an amp in a box, but it will give your tone that special Blackface sparkle in an instant. Make sure to go check out the big lineup of pedals available from RST Custom Effects‘ website – Ready, Set, Tone!
