The crew at TC Electronic has had a long-standing reputation for building some truly innovative and awe-inspiring delays, and possibly the best delay ever in the 2290 Dynamic Digital Delay. Shrinking the principles and options down to fit into a smaller enclosure that fits nicely onto a pedalboard, they’ve created the Nova Delay, a compact delay full of sonic options and tones for days – all the best features of the old school rack units, in a neat and tidy electronic package.

A group of five controls knob starts us off at the top of the ND-1 Nova Delay. Delay (sets the delay time, up to 2290ms), Feedback (number of times the delay effect is repeated), Color (lets you go from a sharp digital delay sound to a warmer, tape echo-type analog tone), Mod Level (add or subtract modulation to your delay) and Mix Level (blend of the wet and dry guitar signals) let you dial in the exacting specifications your rig is in need of, and fairly easily, too. There’s a nice, bright and accurate display in the middle of the pedal as well, letting you know exactly what the tempo of the delay is currently, in either milliseconds or BPM.

The Nova Delay has some other cool features as well, the main one being the ability to select between 6 different delay modes (Delay Line, Dynamic, Reverse, Ping Pong, Pan and Slapback), pretty much allowing you to dial in any delay type you can think of. There are also 6 note subdivisions you can select from, opening up the delay possibilities even further. Add to all this 3 additional settings for slightly varied modulation, plus the ability to store and select from 9 user created presets, and you have a whole lotta love crammed into an enclosure that fits easily anywhere in your setup.

With full stereo in and out capabilities, a separate tap tempo footswitch and a manual delay spillover option as well, you’d be hard-pressed to find another delay of this size with this many features with the low price tag that the ND-1 Nova Delay boasts. Every pedal from the Nova series that we’ve played has been full of both options and surprises, and this delay is no different. Here’s to you, TC Electronic, and looking forward to what you come up with for us in 2016!
