guyatone mdm5 micro delayLittle. Small. Tiny. Miniscule. Pequeño. All the rage as of late, pedalboards (for some guitarists, anyway) have been shrinking down in size year by year, and in order to adapt to this, some pedal makers have begun making smaller and smaller pedals. Getting the jump on everyone a few years ago was Guyatone, who created an entire lineup of “micro” pedals to share with the world, before the world even knew they needed them. Thus, the Micro Series has become pretty famous, and one of their most popular models is today’s Pedal of the Day: the MDm5 Micro Delay.

Right off the bat, this crystal blue beauty is intriguing: maybe it’s the color, maybe it’s the size, or perhaps the fact that it boasts its own special “stomp guard” to protect both the pedal and your settings at the same time. Whatever it may be, the MDm5 is nice to look at, but even more fun to sit down and play.

The top row of controls are pretty standard: Level controls the effect’s output volume, Time controls the overall delay time (up to 2600ms, pretty impressive for a pedal this size), and Repeat lets you adjust the number of times the delayed effect is repeated after a note or chord has been played. Here’s where it gets interesting – there’s a small Mode switch, underneath the stomp guard, which lets you select from three separate delay modes: Short (20-60ms), Medium (80-650ms) and Long (330-2600ms). There’s also a Hi Roll Off knob, which acts as a sort of tone control, to dial in the high or low frequencies you want present with your repeats.

Small but powerful, with a decent amount of potions crammed into a tiny enclosure, the MDm5 Micro Delay just keeps laying out new surprises and tonal variations that make it a blast to play. Plus, the over 2 seconds of max delay time will allow you to get any tempo you want with ease, from short slap back stuff, to long, drawn-out, trippy, spacey sounds that will rock your fans’ world. Don’t underestimate this guy, he packs a solid punch, and brings some new and exciting sonic ideas to the table.
