The Big Muff Family of Fuzzes has many, many members, in various forms, models and creations, and should, after being around for more close to 50 years. One of these family subdivisions it the Russian Green Muff, which was made from 1994-2000 or so, and is one of many highly collectable and sought-after versions of this incredible fuzz. The crew at McCaffrey Audio decided it was time to take on the project of developing their own unique version of this dirty green monster, and the result is today’s pedal, the Green Vodka Muff Fuzz.

Volume, Tone and Sustain help you to create the sounds you’re looking for in this pedal, along with a couple of switches for more added variety as well. One of the main turn-offs about the old Muff pedals is their lack of volume or stage presence, and with the Green Vodka, all those problems are solved, with plenty of output on tap to slice through mixes big and small. The Tone knob offers a great range of high-end/low-end balance, and will get down ad dirty or bright and powerful, and pretty much anything else you can think of in between. Sustain adds a whole new dynamic to the Muff sound as well, with a vast array of sounds available, from grunge to classic rock to fuzzed-out madness, this control really lets you take control and drive this pedal where it needs to go.

The two toggle switches only help to accentuate the first three, and really get this pedal into a different category of fuzz altogether. The Beef is kind of a bright switch of sorts; when switched on (to the left), it gives a new sense of purpose to this pedal, really exploding with raw energy, and really making its presence known. The Pass switch is a three-way low end toggle, giving you options of none, some and most low end responses, if you want to darken up your sound, or just take a little bit of that high end off and see where it takes you.

Aiming to not only recreate a classic sound, but add in some more options, better volume and control section, Ryan built over 40 prototypes of the Green Vodka before he found the one that satisfied his ear, and the result couldn’t be finer. Both aesthetically and sonically pleaseing, this pedal will do a TON of different sounds for you, not only those vintage Muff fuzz tones, but some sustained drive sounds and heavy-hitting, chunky riffs as well. This current version also improves on Version 1 of this pedal (see Kyle Ragan’s review here), both internally and graphically, both of which are welcomed with open arms. Thanks again to Ryan and his staff at McCaffrey Audio for letting us take a stab at this thing – for more info, go check out their website, and don’t forget to check out their other rad pedals as well!
