In this awesome world of pedals, it can sometimes seem like it’s all been done before: sure, there might be a couple of different toggles on this pedal and a new knob or two, but really unique, new and innovative stuff can elude the masses at times, until you stumble across a pedal that truly makes you stop in your tracks. Today’s piece of hardware did exactly that me, as I had never come across a delay/echo/stutter/modulation/reverb/pitch shifter pedal like this….ever. May I proudly present to you, the Cutting Room Floor from Recovery Effects.

The main control knobs run as follows from left to right: Time (delay time), Intensity (intensity of modulation), Modulation (amount of modulation), Blend (wet/dry signal blend) and Volume (overall effects output). Within these relatively simple controls are a vast and ever-expanding allotment of tones, sounds and voices to discover and choose from, guaranteeing no boredom once you sit down with this pedal and turn it on. Not your everyday delay pedal, the Cutting Room Floor works more like an echo or reverb, with the ability to create crazy, oscillating modulation, vintage old-school chorus sound and even emulate classic tape delay and old echo machines from decades ago with ease.

There’s a lone toggle switch present as well, which sets what mode the CRF is currently in. Stutter acts as a one-off delay mode, with a solo repeat of whatever sounds you happen to conjure up. Reverb commands multiple repeats, allowing for more spacey, trippy-sounding effects, especially when paired with different Modulation settings. Plus, a second foot switch called Freeze lets you instantly loop whatever delay sound you can invent, holding it in place and keeping it on infinite repeat until you let up on the switch, making an invaluable addition to ambient, delay-heavy music.

Unlike most pedals you’ll find around these days, the Cutting Room Floor exemplifies “cutting” edge (hehe) technology and innovative design and technique. Graig over at Recovery Effects has been making some incredible gear for a while now – if you haven’t had the opportunity to check out his stuff, do yourself a favor and get to their website pronto. Always pushing the envelope, we’re excited to review more of their pedals, and look forward to whatever is coming around the bend.
