The folks at TC Electronic have been creating incredible delay machines for decades now, moving from impressive rack mount units to some of the most incredible and well-known stompboxes that exist today. From the regular Flashback Delay, to it’s older brother, the Flashback x4, to the Nova Delay and Repeater pedals, TC offers a broad range of options and sizes for you to choose which delay is right for you. Today’s review focuses on one of their latest incarnations, the diverse and intense Flashback Triple Delay.
Right away, you’ll notice the big selection knob on the left that holds all of the delay types (16 of them in all), and realize immediately that this is gonna be a fun pedal to sit down and figure out. Boasting FOUR different TonePrint settings, as well as a multitude of other delay types (Tape, Tube, Space, Analog, Analog Mod, Reverse, Dynamic, 2290, 2290 Mod, Slap, LoFi and Ping Pong), you will literally be experimenting with this pedal for weeks, probably months, and still never harness everything that it’s capable of. Time, Repeats and Mix are fairly standard controls that do exactly what you think they should, and with a maximum delay time of SEVEN seconds, they’re no way you can’t find at least one useful setting on this pedal…if not 100. These settings can all be applied to each individual delay machine as well, opening up even more possibilities.
The Flashback Triple Delay also features 11 different rhythmic subdivisions to choose from, once again making the 3 differing delay options vastly customizable. And if that’s not enough for you, there’s yet another toggle that lets you select between having your delays in series or parallel, and there’s even a Tap Tempo stomp for instantaneous synching to the rest of your band, or to another track when recording in the studio.
One of the main complaints I have heard about the Flashback x4 was that you could only use one of the 3 delays available at any given time, a problem that TC seemed to take into consideration and fix fro the new Flashback Triple. A small toggle switch has been installed that allows you to select which delay switch (1, 2 or 3) you’d like to assign certain settings to, and then lets you turn each one on or off as needed. Being able to select one or all three delay presets at once makes for absolutely endless combinations of sounds, and you can even change the settings for each delay switch on the fly, so dialing in a perfect sound is easy, whether in a live or studio setting.
The main thing here are the actually delay sounds, and being that they’ve been creating them for so long, TC Electronic knows what they’re doing, no doubt about that. With so many different delay machines to choose from, this marvelous stompbox makes for an extremely useful, relatively easy-to-dial-in big box delay, which also lets you combine up to 3 delays at once, making players worldwide able to paint their own unique sonic soundscapes. If you’ve been searching for an incredibly spacious, lush, programmable, option-filled delay that looks and sounds fantastic, look no further than the Flashback Triple Delay.
