As much as I enjoy a nice, small delay pedal that fits beautifully onto my pedalboard, I love the big box delay pedals, the ones that take up too much real estate but sound so incredible that you don’t mind the size whatsoever. In an attempt to satisfy my delay obsession, I may or may not have purchased a number of these pedals over the years, and one that I really dig is the Plush REP-3 Tube-Voiced Delay from our friends at Fuchs Audio Technology.
The main goal of the REP-3 is to recreate the vintage, classic sounds of the old tape echo machines, but without all the maintenance and headaches those heavy, clunky creations seem to bring with them. Designed and built to the high standards Fuchs Audio has become known for, this big silver moose features smooth, analog-ish delay tones, a multitude of controls and soundscapes to explore, not to mention sturdy construction, made with high-quality parts and built like a tank to withstand all the stage stomping and abuse you can throw at it.
The main controls knobs are as follows: Delay (length of the delay time), Echo Level (blend of the wet and dry signals), Wow and Flutter (these control the modulation applied to the delays), Repeats (number of times the delay is repeated) and Fidelity (set the delays from crisp digital to analog warm and smooth). The REP-3 also features an ever-popular Tap Tempo footswitch, with accompanying LED, and a cool VU meter that measures the maximum signal amount the pedal can handle before overload, making sure you’re not running too hot and creating any unwanted distortion or feedback.
There’s also an internal option that lets you use the REP-3’s output for the wet signal only, great for running through an effects loop of an amp if you so desire. Boasting one full second of delay time, this pedal will surely fit the delay needs of most players, especially those chasing that coveted tape echo delay tone and warble. The Wow and Flutter controls really let you experiment with getting the right amounts of modulation on the delay trails, and come hassle-free from having to change expensive tapes, belts, and other pieces of the old machines that might not even be available any more.
The sounds produced by the REP-3 are nothing short of brilliant, and with just the right amount of control knobs (not too few, not too many), creating spectacular and useful sounds within minutes of plugging this bad boy in are a cinch. Fuchs Audio Technology continues to put out brilliant pedals, as well as their incredible line of amps, so make sure you head over to their site and check out what else they have to offer!
