TWA Fly Boys FB-05 Metal

Well, after four other great pedals and a tone of different tones, our “Fly Boys Week” has comes to an end. Finishing off the lineup of Totally Wycked Audio’s Fly Boys lineup is the FB-05 Metal, a huge powerhouse in a tiny and shiny enclosure.

As with the FB-02 Overdrive, the FB-05 Metal has a toggle switch that lets you select from a couple different modes, three in this case, to further expand the possibilities of sonic exploration and wonder. More on that in a minute, let’s check out the main control section first. Volume produces enough output to easily slice and dice any mix you can imagine; Tone has a great range that has beefy low end, and high that are smooth and easy on the ears, with no sonic treble boost that shatters eardrums in its wake. Finally, Distortion controls the amount of gain the Metal puts out, and while it’s not exactly silent when turned down, there are subtle increments of overdrive that make for a broad spectrum of distortion.

The 3-mode toggle switch really makes this pedal shine, though. In the middle position, the Boost function is off, giving this pedal a nice, rhythmic crunch, great for power chords and backing up a fat lead. The Low Boost mode produces a classic scooped mids tone, reminiscent of your favorite punk and thrash tunes we all know and love. Last but not least, Hi-Boost adds in all the high end you can handle, really cutting through the mix and making you stand out from the rest of the band, with a ton of gain and sustain as well. This pedal will turn any amp (well, the ones that can handle it) into a gargantuan heavy metal machine.

The entire line of Fly Boys pedals are encased in sturdy but lightweight aluminum enclosure, making sure they can withstand any punishment thrown at them. Plus, with their small size, traveling to gigs and saving pedalboard space are certainly guaranteed. Thanks to Kevin and Godlyke for sending us this lineup of pedals for this exciting and Totally Wycked review week here – make sure to check out all the pedals they’ve got to offer, and ROCK ON!
