Have you ever heard of the Jordan Bosstone Fuzz? Me neither, until I started doing a little research for today’s pedal review. Turns out, it was this cool little black box that plugged directly into your guitar’s output jack (unless you had a Strat, then it wouldn’t work) and made some incredible fuzz tones. Well, the genius builders at KMA Machines built a take on the Bosstone, aiming to get that classic sound with some modern twists. I’d say they succeeded with the Fuzzly Bear Silicium Fuzz, and after you read this review and watch the video, you just might agree with me.
Busting right out of the gates, the Fuzzly Bear is definitely a plug-and-play pedal, as it is not too hard to get a good sound out of it just by looking at it. This thing immediately POPS! with grit, grunge and girth, and doesn’t really slow down or relax, no matter what settings you put it on. With plenty of loudness on tap, the Volume control will blast you through any mix, and put you at the forefront of the stage, no matter the size. Gain has a great range of sounds, from deep, ballsy low-end drive to the classicist-of-classic-rock fuzz tones, and a whole helluva lot going on in between. The Skin/Meat knob is the true star of this pedal, as it controls the bias of the fuzz circuit, and goes from a sharper, finer, SKIN-ier fuzz sound to a big, fat, thick, MEAT-y tone in a flash. Using these 3 simple controls, the Fuzzly Bear unleashes tone after tone of glorified overdriven rock, and when you crank the Gain all the way up, look out for some seriously gated, scratchy, biting tones to come pouring out of your amp.
Easily going from a low, rumbly, stoner-rock, riff-heavy, sludge-of-a-fuzz to a thick, meaty, raucous wall of fuzz, the Fuzzly Bear will not disappoint you or your fans, and will make you want to stay in the practice room or studio long after the rest of the band has gone home. Thanks to Enrico and the KMA Machines crew for sending this beauty to us to check out – they’ve got a lot of great gear up on their website, and although it has to ship from Germany, anything you get from KMA will be worth the wait, so go check ’em out!
