caroline guitar company kilobyte lo-fi delayI’ve had the Kilobyte LO-FI Delay by Caroline guitar Co. for little over a month now. This is my first delay pedal I’ve tried and owned. There were many delays to choose from, expensive, eccentric, complex, flashy and vice versa. I chose to purchase the Kilobyte mainly for the design. No, just kidding, I chose this delay because of many reasons. The style, features, and the sounds that could be derived form this box.

Now let’s get one thing right about this pedal. The limited edition vintage design is(to me) looks very great, down to every detail, literally! Much of the small scale text is in a 8-bit style. The body and hardware has a retro color scheme with a light brown finish on the body with four dark brown knobs with a classic look to them as if they’re from an old radio set or television, and I also like the added touch of color shown on the little 8-bit dude for the attack knob.

The Kilobyte LO-FI Delay pedal features four main knobs. The Level knob, which controls the overall volume, Attack knob controls the the gain, there is the Binary clock knob that controle the delay time and i found that if you also continue to move the knob in a random fashion while holding a note, it will produce a other worldly sounds as if you’re trying to communicate beyond earth(or to simple people it just very modulated noises), the last of the four main knobs is the summation control, this knob takes care of the number of repeats and if the knob is turned all the way it will create a effect similar to the havoc switch.Don’t let me forget about the mini “TACOS” knob right in the middle of them all. Now to find the reason why it’s named “TACOS” you’ll have to look it up on Caroline Guitar Co. page for the explanation, but it controls the subtle pitch shifting of the repeats. An nice touch might I add.

Now let’s create havoc! No, I’m just talking about the havoc switch. This let you override the summation knob and gives you a loud and crazy “runaway” effect that can add a nice style to an already rocking track to have people wondering ‘what on the world was that?’. I love this delay and I’m happy that was my first choice of the hundreds of delay stomp boxes out there. If you like something that can be simple but can get real weird real quick then this pedal is the one.
