First off. Full disclosure. I’m a self-taught guitarist. I’m okay. But there are absolutely no chances for Grammys in my future.I play for me and me alone. Sometimes I play for Sparkey, my pup (he thinks I’m amazing on guitar). I play mostly through low wattage tube amps. I run an A/B/Y switch to a Blackstar HT-1R and an Orange Micro Terror that my board is connected to. I’ll admit, I have developed an addiction to pedals. I’ve won a few through various contests, but lately my board is all pedals I’ve bought and paid for.

With all that being said, like many, I’m trying to get that cranked, wall of Jim sound from my set up. I was beginning to think I’d find that pot o’ gold guarded by the unicorn first. Well, I found that tone. That magical, mythical sound in the back of my head. I plugged the Keeley Stahlhammer into my board and that Micro Terror had the mighty Angus tone screaming out at me with all the beautiful nuances I’ve been craving. Twist the distortion knob a little more and the Scorps were right there singing that creamy, sustaining grind into my ears. With the bass, middle and treble knobs and a little tweaking, ‘Living After Midnight‘ was coming out of my rig like never before.

But wait! That’s not all. The mad, wonderful genius behind the Keeley designs had one more trick up their sleeve with this little box of joy. There is a switch on the input side that adds…wait for it….even more gain. But not just gain for gain sake, but creamy gain with more sustain that when I add some delay, made me add learn to play ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond‘, and ‘Comfortably Numb‘ to my to do list!

In all honesty, I’d just about resigned myself to never getting that sound that is in head, through my gear, but with the Stahlhammer pedal, all bets are off.

  1. Many thanks Mike and Sparkey! So glad you enjoy the Stahlhanmer. I’m most proud of the fact that it’s a Rat style heavy distortion softened just a touch by adding a Marshall style tone stack to it. That helps dial in so many easy to get sounds!
