I have never had the pleasure of playing a real Klon Overdrive. I almost don’t want to, because I think the hype surrounding them is a little ridiculous, and am pretty sure I would be disappointed. That said, there are many, many clones being produced that have generally the same circuit layout and sound, and they cost $1000-2000 less than an original Klon. JC Audio has made one of these clones, and it is honestly one of the best overdrive pedals I have played.
First off, it looks remarkably similar to a Klon, minus the words printed on the enclosure. Even the knobs are the same, and are easy to grip and twist on the fly. If you look at it really fast, you can almost see a true silver Klon on your pedalboard. Anyway, back to the sound. Three control knobs are at work here: Gain, Treble and Output. The Treble knob works as an overall Tone knob, while the Gain controls how much overdriven sound is coming out of this silver beauty. There’s a good amount of output, too, plenty to drive your amp to that delicious Klon-type boost/drive.
This pedal is not a high-gain overdrive, but is an excellent tone enhancer, and will add just the right amount of grit and drive to your sound if you want it to. Great for pushing a nice tube amp into slight overdrive, while still retaining all the tone and sonic makeup of your guitar, pickups and amplifier. This pedal is true bypass with Neutrik jacks, fast relay silent switching, alpha pots and top notch build quality for durability.
Even if I had it to spend, it would be really difficult for me to pay $2,000 for one pedal, especially when there are so many great builders out there, like JC Audio, who are making remarkable pedals reminiscent of the Klon for a 1/10 of the price. Special thanks to Jordan Curry for building this incredible pedal – if you’d like him to build one (or any number of other awesome pedal clones) for you, email him HERE, or find him on Facebook or Instagram, and see what he can do for you today!
