The classic RAT Distortion pedal. That big, thick, metal box that has sat upon many a pedalboard, and will continue to do so, is a staple of effects pedals if there ever was one. In keeping with that vintage style and sound, Pro Co and RAT distortion have come up with the “RAT on steroids”: ladies and gentlemen, the FATRAT.
A titch bigger than it’s little brother, the FATRAT has a few more controls as well. The typical RAT control knobs line the front of the pedal: Distortion, Filter and Volume. If you’ve ever played a RAT, you know what these do, and if you haven’t, they do what they’re labeled. Distortion adds gain into your signal, Filter adds or subtracts the amount of treble present in the pedal’s tone, and Volume is the overall output of the FATRAT’s signal. There are a couple of options available via toggle switches as well. Users can select from the original or the new MOSFET clipping circuit, which acts as an upper midrange boost, to sound more tube amp-like than the original. There’s a bass enhancer toggle switch as well, which beefs up the low end of the FATRAT’s signal, for those players who like to tune down and get those lows booming through the club.
What’s more, you can run it on either 9V or 18V, for massive headroom and gain, and inside you’ll even find a socketed op-amp, so you can switch between different chips if you desire, opening up even more tonal possibilities. Not to mention this thing wails, but isn’t too harsh like many distortions, especially with the toggle options for getting it to sound perfect with any setup. Thanks again to Darius and everyone at Pro Co/RAT Distortion for sending this pedal our way for a test run – it’s a great testament to a vintage pedal, with a couple of excellent upgrades and tonal shapers.
