Chances are, you’ve seen the classic RAT or RAT2 Distortion pedal on a board somewhere in your lifetime. Perhaps you currently see one on your own board, as many of us do, or have an old classic version you pull out once in a while to really rock. As well known as the RAT pedals are to players around the world, the small black boxes are not the only story. Today we’re going to check out the newest member of the RAT Distortion family: the SOLO Overdrive/Distortion.
Right off the bat, you’ll notice a color shift. The usual black motif has been considerably brightened up with an orange and yellow gradient, giving this pedal instant POP off your board. 4 control knobs are present, plus a 3-way selector switch for added options. My only wish was that the knobs were just a bit more spaced apart, and the 3-way switch came out of the pedal, instead of being recessed, but these are just personal preferences. Distortion add grit and crunch to your signal when the SOLO is turned up, Tone adds or subtracts high frequencies from the overall output and Volume controls, well, the volume. The Scoop knob is a nice mid-tone shaper, and the 3-way switch offers a couple different levels of distortion, from a nice, crunchy overdrive to raging, distorted bliss. This switch utilizes
Plug it in, turn it up and you’re instantly transported to a jam session with your favorite heavy metal heroes. The Scoop and Tone knobs, especially, really allow a lots of tonal range on the SOLO, and the 3-way selector lets you add in as much or as little distortion as your playing requires. All in all, the SOLO is a fun little pedal, and a welcome addition (sonically AND visually) to the pedal line from RAT Distortion.
