I think the Digital Delay line of stompboxes from Boss are all great in their own right, and the DD-7 just might be may favorite. Loads of options, tons of control and all the delay time you’ll ever need, this thing gets it done with a small footprint and loads of fun. The DD-7 features many functions that are present in all of today’s “sought-after” expensive delay pedals, but at a fraction of the cost.
Effect Level, Feedback and Delay Time all do what they should, and you know what that is. I’d like to jump right into the functionality of this delay, as there are many options for you to choose from. 4 different time delay modes allow you to adjust between an ENORMOUS range of delay times, from 50ms all the way up to 3.2 FULL seconds! There aren’t a lot of situations where you’re gonna need more than 3 seconds of delay, and if you do, you probably already have a pedal specifically for that purpose. The delay times here are more than enough for most of us, and allow for tons of experimentation. Plus, you can hook up and external Tap Tempo switch and control the delay time on the fly (within the parameters of whatever mode you’re in, of course). This is a great feature, one that has become almost a staple on pedalboards everywhere, and the DD-7 is right up to speed (pun intended).
The Hold feature is always welcome, and is easy to use here as a mini-looper of sorts. Modulate adds a little of our favorite warble and wackiness into the mix, and the Analog setting is right on as well. Very warm-sounding in this mode, Boss has really figured out how to re-create those classic analog sounds and add them into the digital realm. Always a fun time, the Reverse mode lets you get super-spaced-out and psychedelic, conjuring up guitar tones from the heyday of the hippies. The DD-7 also has 2 Inputs and 2 Outputs, making for easy stereo operation running between 2 different amplifiers, another welcome feature in such a small box.
All-in-all, the DD-7 from Boss just ups the ante on the continual evolution of their delay line, and although I’m not sure how they could fit more features into a stompbox this size, I’m sure they’ll figure out a way.
