Here we go again! This time, our Boss Delay-of-the-day is the DD-3, probably the simplest of the lineup, and one of the easiest to control. This pedal does not take a degree in physics or electrical engineering to figure out (though, it would be cool to have those) – the DD-3 is extremely user-friendly, with a couple of basic knobs that tell you exactly what they do, all you have to do is turn them until you hear something you like…which isn’t difficult, either.
Effect Level blends the delayed sound and your guitar’s dry signal, enabling control over how much delay you hear over top of your original tone. I’ve always appreciated these knobs, more so than a straight volume control, and it seems to turn out smoother and sound better every time. The feedback levels are controlled by the next knob, conveniently labeled Feedback, and adjust the amount of repeats the delayed signal has, from a single repeat up to infinite repeats, and that’s where it starts to get fun. Delay Time is adjusted by the next knob, which also works in conjunction with the final Mode control, as there are 3 delay modes (long, middle, short) which range from 12.5ms up to 800ms, depending which of those 3 modes you’re in. Finally, there’s the Hold mode, which allows you to repeat the delayed signal infinitely, which is yet another interesting and fun mode to explore, and will conjure up some interesting sounds and textures for you to play over.
The DD-3 has been a staple on many, many pedalboards since its release in 1986 as an inexpensive but extremely effective digital stompbox. Not the most versatile delay you’re going to come across, but that’s not what it’s supposed to be. Simple and clean, with enough delay time and options for nearly everyone, the DD-3 from Boss is a great little delay. Check out our review of the DD-6 as well!
