Midnight 30 Music Warbler Tap Tremolo

The Warbler Tap Tremolo pedal from Midnight 30 Music is a two-of-a-kind pedal, meaning there’s only one other one in existence. I was lucky enough to snatch this guy up, and am now the proud owner of a versatile, fun, deep, lush and rare tremolo pedal. It’s got some great features, a super-rad Star Trek graphic and a lot more that we’ll get into in this review as well.

The Warbler is a pretty complicated pedal, to be honest: there’s a lot going on within the 5 control knobs, 2 footswitches and the external input jack. The Depth and Tempo knobs are exactly what you think they are, controlling the intensity and speed of the signal, respectively. Now the Waveform knob lets you choose from the following: Up ramp, Down ramp, Square/pulse, Triangle, Sine, Hypertriangle (the top of this waveform is a triangle, the bottom is a sine), Inverted Hypertriangle (the top is a sine, the bottom is a triangle) and Random steps. Whew! That’s a lot of tremolo ground to cover in one knob, but so much fun to discover new sounds and sonic mysteries with. The Multiply knob has a bunch of functions as well: use it to change the speed of the tremolo from half notes, quarter notes, triplet quarter notes, eighth notes, triplet eighth notes, or sixteenth notes. This allows you to achieve much faster speeds than you can using the regular tap method, and adds yet another dimension of sonic range to this incredible pedal.

The Wave Dist. knob distorts each waveform. Setting it to center gives the standard waveforms. Turning up or down changes the pulse width (on-to-off ratio) while also changing the “hardness” of each wave. Very cool to use in conjunction with each of the individual waveforms, and makes for hours of noodling fun. The footswitch on the Left is interesting as well – it’s a momentary SPST stomp switch. The chip takes the last 2 taps to determine tempo. Working in conjunction with the external Tap located on the top of the unit, you can adjust to different blocks of speed, then speed those up or down as needed for a specific song. Each time you click it twice, the rate increases, and there are 6 clickable blocks. You then use the external tap (I use a Boss FS-5U) to control the individual speeds. I have never seen a tremolo pedal that was able to perform this functionality, and it is quite a useful and intelligent option, one that should be adopted by more tremolo pedal builders.

This is a way-fun guitar pedal, one that fits in perfectly with my setup, and does almost everything I need a tremolo to do for my sound. Make sure to go say ‘Hey’ to Joshua over at Midnight 30 Music, and see all the gear they’ve got. Who knows, he might just be able to make you Warbler Number Three…
