RayGun FX recently sent me a couple pedals to review, and I gotta tell you, they are making some incredible gear for guitarists (check out the Soda Drive). This dual Drive caught my eye right away when I was checking out their website, and as anyone who reads these reviews knows, I’m a real sucker for Dual pedals of any kind, especially Overdrives. The Fat Drive is a Clean Booster and Overdrive in one, which means it will give off some dirt, but keep your tone intact as well.
There are two sides to every story, and in this case, to every Dual Fat Drive pedal. Volume and Gain are the simple controls used for both sides, so it should be pretty easy for you to figure out. If not, maybe you should take up knitting or wood carving, as playing the guitar might not be your thing. Each side is independent, so you can set them to your liking, and then combine both for a wall of overdrive. I liked the Left side set to a medium-drive tone, just enough to start to break up the amp a little bit, but still subtle enough not to become overpowering. The Right side I set to a higher-gain, giving some nice crunch and punch to my guitar’s signal.
When the Gain knobs are cranked, on either side, you get a really warm and organic distorted tone, not too much and not too hot, just a great tube amp-like sound. Having the 2 sides set independently is great, as you can use both for different applications, but hitting them both together is a magical moment. The two channels working in tandem produce a full-on powerhouse of sound, and will push your amp clear over the top. You can click them both on, dial in the tone you want for when they’re both engaged, then see how they sound independently, which makes for some fun results as well.
This is a pretty basic 2-in-1 pedal, but a well-built and great-sounding one. I relish the ability to have 2 distinct tones in one small pedal, and the Dual Fat Drive does exactly that. Thanks again to Steve and RayGun FX for being an awesome Donator, please make sure you go check out their site and see their entire collection of badass pedals!
