Man, this is a hard company to track down information about! While I would have liked a little more info on this pedal, the Smilodon Fuzz from Aethan Electronics is an all-out, buzzsaw, balls-to-the-wall, ass-kicking fuzz pedal, and with only a few (who knows the actual number) of these ever made, it is a RARE find, one that will not be leaving my side anytime soon.
The pedal itself isn’t much bigger than a standard Boss enclosure, which is useful if you want to mount it vertically and save precious pedalboard space. Volume knob increases the output, of course. The Wool knob is your overall fuzz control, ranging from a slight fuzz to shrieking, heavy, dirty, fuzzy gooeyness dripping from your amp. There’s nothing clean about this pedal (except the layout and design), but you can roll back your guitar’s volume to back off the fuzz tones a bit, without having to bend down to turn any knobs, or ever turn the pedal off. The EQ knob is for the Tone, and provides a nice depth to the sound, going from low and sludgy (but not muddy) to high and crisp, all the while retaining your guitar and amp’s tonal properties. The final knob is a fun fuzz knob, the Pinch. This allows you to cut the fuzz signal for an immense amount of break-up, leaving big, wide gaps of sonic invisibility interspersed with pulsing growls and full-on wasp attack driven fuzz. Set this one all the way to the right to keep your signal straight, or move it to the left in increments to really delve into some fun fuzz play.
According to Reverb.com, where this pedal was purchased, there’s only ONE more of these Smilodon Fuzzes left for sale, then that’s “likely the last one” Aethan Electronics will be making. Check out the demo video there if you’re interested, although you’ll have way more fun sitting around playing with yourself…you know what I mean, sicko. Overall, this is one great fuzz pedal, not for the faint of heart, but something everyone should hear at least once.
