Based on the super-rare Colorsound Dipthonizer circuit, the Little Dipper Mk II Envelope Controlled Vocal Formant Filter is a really fun pedal to play around with, and is capable of making roughly a gajillion different sounds. Using dual filters, a couple of control knobs and switches and even an Expression Pedal, this little box packs a wallop!
While the Little Dipper is an envelope filter, it’s so much more at the same time. Capable of emulating effects ranging from phasers and flangers to a talk box to a straight-up wah, this thing has a hundred different uses, and half the fun is finding them, and seeing how they will work for your setup or signal path. One of the coolest knobs, in my opinion, is the Diffraction knob, which basically adds fuzz into your sound. It’s a fairly subtle option, and even when cranked it doesn’t really go all-out fuzz, but it adds just the right amount of “Oomph” that you need sometimes. The Inclination slider up top is awesome as well, controlling 5 different wah/vowel sounds for you to experiment with. The Ascension knob lets you adjust the amount of filter sweep that is present, and work with the Inclination slider to produce various tones and filter sounds (honestly, all of the controls pretty much work together, so an adjustment of one can send the whole soundscape in another direction). The Expression pedal jack allows you to control the Ascension knob with your foot, there’s a Low Boost switch so it will sound killer with a bass, PLUS an Occultation switch, which has 7 MORE positions that help you shape and configure your own unique tones. All this in an enclosure that’s not much bigger than a standard Boss pedal.
Like I said before, the Little Dipper is an envelope filter of sorts, but so much more as well. The folks over at Totally Wicked Audio have really crushed the new version of this pedal, with more features and sounds than you can possibly imagine. Plus, I love how the Little Dipper LED lights get brighter when the pedal is engaged – what a cool concept and execution! Keep up the good work, guys, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future!
