jhs pedals '73 ram's head replica fuzzThe ’73 Ram’s Head Fuzz from JHS Pedals is designed to replicate the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff π sold in the mid-1970s, and is named for the logo that adorned the pedals of that time period. Used extensively by David Gilmour in the latter part of the 70s, as well as J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., the Big Muff π has become a legendary tone-maker, and the ’73 Ram’s Head is an excellent modern take on a classic.

With 3 knobs, the level of difficulty to dial in a great tone is minimal. Volume blends the level of the effect with your guitar’s signal, Tone focuses on either the lows or highs produced when the pedal is engaged, and Sustain dials in the amount of fuzzy deliciousness protruding from your amplifier. Ranging in color from a slight gritty tone to all-out levels of distorted fuzz, the ’73 Ram’s Head provides more than enough oomph to get the crowd (or studio) rockin’. Tons of Floyd-ish solos to be copied using this pedal, no doubt, but also room for experimentation and exploration into your own guitar setup and sound. One of the funnest parts about reviewing this pedal was simply sitting down, cranking my amplifier and messing with the knobs to get the pedal to work with the rest of my setup, which is half the fun of pedals in the first place, in my opinion. This beautiful pedal really getting the blood flowing, and is a joy to focus on and really dial in some amazing fuzzy sounds in your living room.

I know lots of guitarists’ swear by their original Big Muffs, as they have every right to. They are still going for a pretty penny on eBay and elsewhere as well, so this may be a more affordable option for some players seeking that classic sound. Is this a 1970’s Big Muff? No. Does it sound a lot like one, but with updated circuitry and modern components? Absolutely. Purists will surely have a problem with that statement, but they might be just a little bit flexible after playing one of these spectacular fuzz pedals from JHS. This one is an Exclusive Limited Edition as well, sold only through Chicago Music Exchange. Get one while they last…try it, I dare you!
