Transparent Overdrive. Those words seem to be everywhere in the guitar effects community these days, and have for a little while now. But, there’s a good reason: they help to beef up the sound that already exists between your guitar and amp, but without coloring it in a way that changes the overall tone. They work as kind of an enhancer, as some say, to really get your amp to shine and pour out the awesome tones everyone is constantly searching for.
The EM-Drive from Emerson Custom Guitars is a pristine example of this type of overdrive. Start out with the knobs at around noon, and you’ll get a great clean boost that really adds some sparkle to your guitar signal. Turn that Gain knob up past 3:00, and listen to your amp purrrrr like a kitten, full of warm, full-bodied tones that will really make your amp sing. I use it at the beginning of my signal path as a first stage overdrive, just to get my tone in that sweet spot where I like it. The EM also plays nice with other overdrives, as it provides an initial boost going into your distortion, to help enhance those pedals’ sweet sounds as well.
If you are looking for a full-on rocker grit pedal, look elsewhere. The EM-Drive is a tone-shaper, not a face-melter. It might just be the last piece of the puzzle your board has been looking for!
