Versatility in an overdrive can be KEY to its performance, and the Jalapeño Overdrive from Pepper Pedals combines oft-present controls with a few extras to form a creative and outstanding overdrive. Your basic Level, Tone and Gain knobs make up the core of almost every overdrive pedal, and the Jalapeño is no different. However, two toggle switches allow you to truly customize your overdrive, and make it work for you and your guitar.
The first switch is a FAT switch, which allows you add a little bit of heavy chunk and low-end heat to your tone. The second switch is the SEEDS switch, which is a three-way toggle with very distinct sounds: UP gives you an added crunch tone, MIDDLE is a great Boost, and DOWN compresses your tone just enough but not too much. All 3 positions are extremely usable, where a number of other overdrives I’ve encountered have only had one, maybe two positions that worked out of the three. The Jalapeño lets you choose EXACTLY what sound you want it to give you, with all the sparkle and shine of a great OD. Meaty yet warm, crunchy yet smooth, this pedal will take a while to dial in, as the options are vast and the tones remarkable.
Hand-built, one at a time, supreme craftsmanship, and true bypass – everything we’re all looking for in a great effects pedal. As soon as I tested it out, it went right onto my board, and I don’t see it leaving anytime soon. You want a custom graphic on your pedal? Just ask. They’ll even do metal etching if need be. Big thanks to J. Pepper for being a righteous dude and donating a pedal for this review, go check out his site and buy some gear!
