keeley electronics boss ds-1 distortion ultra modThe Boss DS-1 has been a staple pedal on many boards since its release in 1978. Now, the stock pedal sounds good, and will give you some nice distortion tones, but the Ultra Mod from Robert Keeley Electronics makes it sound like an absolute dream. Described as “Marshall-Amp Tone-In-A-Box”, this mod includes the special “Seeing Eye LED” and switch, to go from Ultra to Seeing Eye mode with just a flick. Lower noise level, true midrange tones and increased bass response make this pedal sound leaps and bounds better than the stock pedal. I think stock pedal tends to be a bit harsh and kind of abrasive, but this mod smooths everything out, making the tone pleasurable to all who encounter it.

This is an incredible distortion pedal once the mod is done, giving your signal anything from a slightly overdriven boost to an all-out fuzzy distorted mess. Starting out with all the dials set at noon, it’s a lot of fun to twist the knobs and dial in the perfect distorted sound, especially with the use of the Mode switch, which just add more sonic possibilities. A great boost to an already staple effect, the Keeley Ultra-modded DS-1 is a pedal you can count on!
