On its own, the CE-2 from Boss has a smooth, natural-sounding chorus effect, which is what has made it one of the most beloved chorus pedals since it’s introduction in 1979. Not trying to be fancy, not trying to do too much, just doing its job (and doing it well). You can set the Rate and Depth knobs fairly deep to get more of a tremolo-y effect, but where it really shines is backing off the dials until you get just the right amount of chorus…and then leaving it alone. This pedal won’t make you’re rig into something over-the-top, but will definitely provide a lush and incredible sound to your signal. On top of that, the one I have has been modded by Modest Mike, who is doing some great stuff with pedals himself.
With this unique mod, Modest Mike puts a little spin on how you would normally use a stompbox. A switch is installed that allow you to crossover into a “Vibrato” mode – when the pedal is off, so is your guitar’s signal. The signal only comes back on when you turn the pedal on, and it is modulated when that occurs. As you do this rapidly, the effect produced is supposed to recreate that of an old vibrato (which works OK), but is a fun trick to have in your arsenal nonetheless. The mod also increases the amount of Speed available to you, which is always a plus in any chorus pedal, just to have a bit more headroom in your overall sound. Great organic tones now pour out of your old CE-2 pedal (they also mod the CE-3 and CE-5), and truly transform it into a beautiful chorus sound.
As with most pedals, the sound is in the ear of the beholder (hee hee), and the CE-2 from Boss is no different. Some folks want crazy, balls-out chorus sound added to their signal, and some folks just want to add a bit of subtle shimmer to their tone. This pedal is definitely for the latter, which is by no means a bad thing, just another in a sea of personal pedal preferences. Add in the fun (and great-sounding) mods from Modest Mike, and you’ve got a clean, sweet, enjoyable, durable and fantastic chorus pedal for the ages, and beyond…
